Adventure Training
Each squadron in the ATC will generally have its own special activity. Maybe drill, sports or aircraft recognition. However, at Holmfirth squadron we try our best to be the best at as many activities as possible, but if there is one subject that we are one notch above the rest for, it would be Adventure Training. This is mainly due to our special location. Situated in the middle of Holme Valley in Yorkshire, we are surrounded by hills, cliffs, forests and rivers. This means that any map reading or DPM work we do, we will not have to travel far to do it. HQ Holmfirth AC is located on the edge of the river Holme, and surrounding the area behind the squadron in a large hill covered in woods, tracks and everything needed to do adventure training and the best night exercises possible.
The Adventure Training side of the ATC will usually be done in DPM uniform (disruptive patterned material). It is widely viewed as the most exciting side of being in the ATC. It can involve map reading, building tents & shelters, cooking rations in the field, camouflage & concealment and many other skills from field craft .Adventure Training is done mostly during the summer period and will usually be a large part of the programme when on RAF camps at Easter and Summer.
